WHY DO MANY FLAGS LOOK SO SIMILAR?

Something useful to know.

In most cases that flags are similar you see that these countries are very closely related either historically, culturally or ethnically. Usually they are descended from the same people group. Other times it because of shared definition of common symbols or colors.

Let's first look at some of the flags of Europe and see patterns that emerge. I would like to start off with the world famous Union Jack which ties together elements of many nations into a single flag and which has become the predecessor to flags across the world. By understanding the Union Jack you can start to understand how the symbols for national identity are related throughout the world and why flags all over the world look so similar.
This is the modern flag of the United Kingdom and it is actually a rather interesting study in the evolution of flags in Europe. We won't begin with the Union Jack though, but start somewhere much older that puts the roots to many European standards in a more ancient place.

I would like to start in the tiny country of Denmark:

The Scandinavian countries all show a similar use of crosses and for the most part color in their selection of flags, probably owed to the expansion and the establishment of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Denmark:
Norway:

Finland:

Sweden

Following the early period of Danish and Scandinavian advance you see expansion from the Scandinavian countries into other parts of Europe. Through later conquest and colonization these nations influenced flags like that of Iceland and the countries that one day form the United Kingdom.

Iceland: (It's the exact opposite of Norway)

It also gave the British Isles many of their flags, which still exist in one form today. The modern UK flag is comprised of a marrying of at least three different historical flags (St Andrew's Cross, St George's Cross and St Patrick's Cross)

Kingdom of Scotland (St Andrew's Cross)

England (St George's Cross)

These two led to the creation of flag of Great Britain. This is the original "Union Jack" named as the flag that signified King James I joining of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, which he was the ruler of both by the twists and turns of European monastic destiny. James was the first legitimate heir to both the crowns of Scotland and England. With the death of Queen Victoria I, King James of Scotland ascended to the rank of King of England as well. When he joined the crowns in person he also joined the two kingdoms of the island of Britain into one kingdom. Along with a joining of their coat of arms came a joining of their flags in this form, the symbol of the union of the island of Britain. Thus the "Union" part of the name. The "Jack" is also owed to King James as Jack is borrowed from the Latin pronunciation of James.

Eventually the Union Jack added Saint Patrick's Saltire or Saint Patrick's Cross, a common symbol for Ireland up to the year 1800.

These three were the flags combined to produce the 1801 variant for the flag of the United Kingdom and were a unifying symbol of the most important states of the early British Empire. They carried colors and patterns common throughout Europe at that time and still visible in flags of today. In it we see the colors red, white, and blue as well as the use of crosses. These colors are visible in other European standards such as France, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland and Finland among others.

France
Netherlands:

Poland
The cross is also a common theme that is in several countries in Europe and most likely can be traced to Christian influences around the time of the when flags began being adopted by entire countries. Examples include countries like the previously stated Scandinavian countries as well as Switzerland and others.

Switzerland:

Finally, you arrive at the flag of the UK. You look at it and it appears very unique, but break it apart and you see a history of not only the United Kingdom, but of much of Europe, including shared traditions, values and beliefs. It represents a movement of people and ideas for the better part of a thousand years. But the story doesn't stop there.

Flag of the United Kingdom 1801:

Several countries today trace their roots to times when they were colonies of the British Empire. They feature a Union Jack in the top corner of the flag to denote this with other defining characteristics. Here Australia and New Zealand both feature the Southern Cross constellation:

Australia:

New Zealand:
Other colonies feature the Union Jack, but with the various coat of arms for each respective territory. Now many who still carry this are independent or part of the Commonwealth of Nations, but carry the tradition of their colonial flags.
Figi:

Bermuda:

Tuvalu:

And a much older one called the Grand Union Flag

Which many believe to be the original to what we now know as...
The Flag of the United States

What is interesting now is how America's influence has influenced the development of other flags in the world through their own colonization and diplomatic efforts. You can see this in how flags of various other nations that were once colonies of America or founded by Americans bare a striking resemblance.

Liberia:

Puerto Rico:

Flag of the former Republic of Texas

But European influence isn't the only one by far. Now let's look at the flags of much of the Middle East, Northern Africa and parts of Asia.

Flags of the Middle Eastern heritage.

Yemen:
Syria:

Egypt:
Iraq:
Palestine:
Sudan:
Jordan:
Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic: (Not in the Middle East, but made up primarily of ethnic Arabs on the West Coast of Africa.)
United Arab Emirates.
Iran:
Tajikistan (Tajiks are ethnically similar to Iranis):
Libya:
Azerbaijan:
Algeria:

Pakistan:

Turkey:
Tunisia:
Malaysia:

(This one's not what you think. Flag of Malaysia)

From these we can see a few different patterns that center on a few main themes. What you will notice first is the prevalence of the Pan-Arabic flag and colors which is a pattern that has been adapted as a unified symbol of much of the Islamic world. Upon change of regime or independence many nations chose this scheme to show their shared cultural link with Islam.

Secondly you will notice the pattern of star and crescent, which historically goes back to the Ottoman empire. It was a symbol used by the Ottomans and spread throughout their empire and now can be seen in the flags of Islamic nations spread as far as Pakistan, Turkey and even Malaysia.

Summary:

Flags are a link to a much larger story about the people who allow them to be their civic and personal banner. A group of people must identify with them to allow them to wave. A flag is a unifying element that binds a group together and separates them from others. It codifies values and builds walls from the outside. They are adopted by those who want to emulate other great nations. They evolve over time, but by looking at them as a whole we see a story. So you can see the effects of colonialism, religion and ethnicity on how different nations have adopted similar flag variants. From Denmark to the UK to Texas, Saudi Arabia, to Turkey to Malaysia flags can serve as a family tree of nations and cultures. They show the movements of people and ideas and are a link to our shared cultural heritages. All this to say there is a lot of reason why they look a lot alike.

MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS IS THE NEW BUSINESS MARKET TO STRIVE IN

Except from J.Chin:

Imagine you paid $250 a ticket to an event.

You go there and sit down, one among maybe 100 or 200 people there.  There is a buzz in the air, people are curious about what they’ll hear.  Everyone is excited!

A man walks on stage wearing flip flops and torn sweatshirt and old sweat pants.

He clearly needs to comb his hair and shave.

It doesn’t matter. You are there  to get motivated! Yes, you are sitting that close – because you paid for  VIP SEATING with $250, man!

Everyone calms down, stops squirming. The man is going to start. He says,

“Well here’s the deal, folks. Life is hard. It’s not fair. You can  work like a dog and make big dreams and chances are, you aren’t going to  succeed. In fact, you’d probably fail more often than you’d ever sniff  the tail end of any success. You may even go bankrupt trying.

Your family and friends will think you’ve gone nuts and some may  abandon you if they don’t commit you or try a group intervention. Your  only source of strength may very well be your stubborn belief that you  need to follow through with your crazy idea and maybe alcohol. Ask me how I know.

There is no magic bullet. There is no top 10 secrets to getting rich. Once you’ve solved your current problems you’ll be rewarded with a  whole new set of harder problems. There is no easy lunch. No free lunch.  No lady luck. No psychic who can tell you the winning lottery numbers.

That book I wrote? Well, that’s just my story and even I had to  embellish it a bit or else you wouldn’t want to buy it, it would be way  too boring. It’s all complicated. There are no easy answers. And  frankly, all these things you already know, so I might as well bid you  adieu right now.”

The man walks off. He has given you the cold hard truth.

Would you be happy for what you’ve gotten with your cold hard cash?

The reason why so many motivational speakers may appear to be (or  indeed are) frauds is because there is a strong demand from an audience  who want the illusion they sell.

The truth is painful.

No one wants to pay good money for Truth – they’re already living it.

***

A lot of motivational speakers are out in the public today. They have the expertise to hook you up on they're well fabricated point of view and amazed you with reality of life which you already know. Why are they're so in demand? One reason I could probably share is that Motivation is a drive which we wanted to hear from someone rather on our own. We needed someone to confirm the truth. Entrepreneurs have seen the growth of deficit in this market and made a great strategy to fill in the demand. They've seen the path of success on this road, beware.

TIPS ON GETTING ALONG WELL WITH KIDS

Having a hard time understanding children? Here's some useful information you may try;

www.shamokindamhealthcenter.com

Diane Meriwether a Former Preschool Teacher,

Pro Tip: First time you meet a shy toddler, compliment their shoes.
Here's why:

You want to reduce the tension by initiating a friendly conversation about something that you can both see and agree on.  The minute you say, "Look at your cool red shoes!"  or "Are those pants blue?" the little one will follow your gaze down. The child now has something comfortable to look at besides your scary stranger face while she gets used to your presence and voice.

Don't compliment the child directly.  Go for what they are wearing or holding.  You're looking to bring positive focus to something personal, but not so personal that you run the risk of making her more self-conscious.

Bonus points if you can integrate a color or cartoon character that the child knows the name of:
You: "Is that Mickey Mouse?"
Child:  "Mickey Mouse."
You "Yeah, Mickey Mouse.  I like Mickey Mouse."
Child: "Micky Mouse."

Now that's meaningful small talk, toddler style.

P.S. this works with grown ups too

THE SIMPLE THINGS THAT'S MAKE US GRADIOUSLY HAPPY

I've asked ramdom people online 'what are simple things that makes you happy?'

Most of them has different answers:

  • A smile from a passing by stranger
  • My dog randomly bumping into me and trying to get me to pick him up.
  • Random people offering to help me
  • A mother cuddling her baby
  • A child going to school early in the morning with a water bottle in one hand and his lunch basket in another.
  • Just sitting between a bunch of friends and hear them talking about shit
  • Being hugged

Making my mom happy makes me happy...^_^

"Long conversations with a dear friend."

"delicious food "

"Listening favorite music after waking up early morning. "

"Seeing my mom super excited, which is most of the time :)"
We are unique in many aspect but we are common by one reason that is being human. As humans, we appreciate little things and we value what makes us happy.

WHAT I LIKE HERE IN DUBAI

I've been staying here for more than a month now, looking for opportunity. Well, when our plane had landed and I was able to look outside my first impression is the Dubai airport is HUGE. Second, the humid is hot which is not new but the technology and architecture design that their campaigning is really amazing. Here are the list of what I like here in Dubai.

1. Their Overpass bridge is fully air-conditioned with elevator and escalator.
2. There’s no traffic.
3. Waiting shed are also in fully-air-conditioned, you can stay there as long as you want.
4. Their taxi’s are all brand new (in good condition) and the taxi driver’s knows every place you ask him to go.
5. Food comes easy. 5 dhs is equivalent to 2 pcs big chicken plus a box of fries and a bread.
6. Their metro station is very accessible.
7. Rules and regulation here are very tight.
8. Malls are open up until 12 midnight. :)))
9. When they say SALE, it’s really true, Go grab your cart because it’s half the price with the same quality.
10. Everything is TAX FREE.

EXPAT

As an expat from another country, you have different view as the usual normal person. First things is that, you are longing for your friends especially me I’m in my early twenties plus the fact that I’m clingy. As time passes away, here in Dubai.. You get the feeling of questioning yourself?? Yes, I’m earning a little high than before but I’m feeling lonely. Does the loneliness equate the money you are earning?? If you say yes, then might as well resort into things which you will not feel lonely but still earn a good damn money. Tips that work for me and you might want to use:
  1. Explore that place you are currently in right now. Travelling can uplift yourself and the new things you will discover.
  2. Make friends, though most of the people here are older than me, you will learn a lot from them PROMISE!!! Learn as much as you can, whether street smart knowledge or elite management learning, zip it in!!
  3. Download Skype, Viber, whatsUp or Facebook on your smart phone.. It’s 2014 duh!! Technologies are surprisingly making its move to best level it could be.
  4. Keep calm, think of this as a long distance travel trip and it would be a good way to detach from the circle you have before back in your home country.
  5. Flirt a little, having a crush and give some gush on the constant meter love you have. You need to be a little crazy but not too much! You might ruin your whole life in a minute.
That’s it!!! Hope this can help all the expatriate feeling down or lonely. You’re not alone, on this kind of situation. you need to think of better solution on how we can uplift our self since we don’t have much choices. Love lots <3
